Small disclosure here; several of this months photos were taken by my husband due to my non-functioning left arm.
July promised to be relaxed and tad bit boring… for me.
Since our children have grown and started families of their own and we retired, the 4th of July is sort of a non-holiday. Usually a noisy one, but just another day.
This one was very pleasant. Our friends D and R invited us to a bar-b-que at their home in the south hills of Eugene. Eugene is always tinder dry at this time of the year so several years ago the city banned private fireworks and although D and R are outside the city limits people in the area respect that ordinance. So we spent the afternoon with D and R and some of their family and friends. The food is always exceptional and the company enjoyable. All in all a good way to start the month.
Two weeks later we were on our way up I-5 toward Long Beach, Washington. I prefer driving up the coast, but summer is a crazy slow time for that. We were meeting our daughter and her family for a week at the beach. They live on the west edge of the prairie 20 minutes outside Denver so she and the boys were beyond excited when we met up with them.
Long Beach holds a lot of deep family history for us. We came here to camp nearly every summer at Cape Disappointment.
Long Beach is your typical seaside tourist trap. Fudge on every block. Lots of seafood. Go carts. An arcade. Surprisingly the grandsons didn’t ask to go to any of those places – just Scoops, the ice cream shop.
The boys really wanted to go to the beach everyday. They live a long way from the beach. The pool and art projects Mom brought occupied the rest of their time.
The big event of the week was the Treasure Hunt! This is something David started two years ago when all 4 grandsons were at Long Beach at the same time. David bought a couple of little wooden treasure chests, some fake “jewels”, and fake doubloons, and a large plastic spider.
The rest of the week was very laid back and relaxed, which was great since I was still recouping and our daughter and son-in-law really needed some R&R.
We finished off the month the way we started; dinner with our friends D & R.
